Nephrotoxic Effects of Cadmium

چکیده

Cadmium is a modern toxic metal and is a by-product of zinc and lead mining and smelting, which are important sources of environmental pollution. In humans, the kidney is recognized as the most critical organ affected by chronic exposure to cadmium. The present study was designed to explore the renotoxic effects of intraperitoneal acute administration of CdCl2 (0.32 mg/kg b.w.) in albino mice. Cd administration led to significant (P<0.001) reduction in body weight and kidney weight. Cadmium treatment increased glycogen content but decreased cholesterol content and total proteins when compared with the control group. In parallel, serum urea and creatinine was also elevated in toxic group.

Tubular and Glomerular Kidney Effects in Swedish Women with Low Environmental Cadmium Exposure

Cadmium is a well-known nephrotoxic agent in food and tobacco, but the exposure level that is critical for kidney effects in the general population is not defined. Within a population-based women's health survey in southern Sweden (Women's Health in the Lund Area, WHILA), we investigated cadmium exposure in relation to tubular and glomerular function, from 1999 through early 2000 in 820 women (...

Subcellular targets of cadmium nephrotoxicity: cadmium binding to renal membrane proteins in animals with or without protective metallothionein synthesis.

Nephrotoxic effects of cadmium exposure are well established in humans and experimental animals. An early manifestation of such toxicity is calciuria a few hours after injection of CdMT in rats. Protection against calciuria and other adverse effects such as proteinuria (occurring later) is offered by pretreatment with Cd, which effectively induces metallothionein synthesis. In the present exper...

Cadmium nephropathy.

Cadmium, an important environmental toxic agent has the kidney as its most important target organ. It is concentrated mainly in the renal cortex. Excessive renal accumulation of cadmium causes well defined morphological and ultrastructural pathological changes in the proximal tubules. Functional changes accompanying cadmium nephropathy include proteinuria, enzymuria, aminoaciduria, glycosuria, ...

Health effects of environmental exposure to cadmium: objectives, design and organization of the cadmibel study: a cross-sectional morbidity study carried out in Belgium from 1985 to 1989

Cadmium is a cumulative environmental pollutant. For the general population mainly exposed by the oral route and through tobacco smoke inhalation, the kidney is the critical organ. Belgium is the principal producer of cadmium in Europe, and certain areas of the country are polluted by cadmium mainly because of past emissions from nonferrous industries. Preliminary studies carried out in one pol...

Inhibition of Nephrotoxic Activity of Mesobuthus Eupeus Scorpion Venom by Commercial Polyvalent Antivenom in Rabbits

Background: Immunotherapy is the only specific treatment for scorpion envenomation. In the present study, the protective effects of polyvalent antivenom against histopathological complications in kidneys and marker changes (BUN and creatinine) induced by Mesobuthus eupeus (Me) scorpion venom was investigated in anesthetized rabbits. Methods: Twenty four rabbits were randomized into four gro...
